July 13, 2011 – So who is this small boy that commands so much attention from us?

In this picture, taken on a recent beach walk, he’s breaking spontaneously into air guitar. Sometimes, when the music’s on, he’ll do air drums though he will tell you he wants to learn how to play electric guitar first and then the drums. He likes to listen to Rancid, Joe Strummer and he’s recently been won over by Adele, singing along to “Rolling in the Deep” with his sister. Plastic guitar in hand, he’s got all the rock star moves down pat.

His most recent obsession is swordfighting like the knights of old, shield in hand. He wants to play hockey, he learned to ride a two-wheeler in a day without training wheels (thanks to his Strider) and he has pretty good fine motor skills for a guy his age.  Who else takes apart Lego down to the hands, yes, the wee hands, of the little Lego figures?  He’s trying to discern reality from make believe–Mom, are zombies for real life? Clone troopers and the entire Star Wars universe are, of course, real (and no, he hasn’t seen the movie). He loves Frog and Toad, Charlie and Lola and Curious George. He wants to be a bad guy one day, a fairy the next. He’s a doer. If he’s thirsty, he opens the fridge, pulls out the milk jug, grabs a cup and gets ready to pour. If he’s hungry, he opens up the cupboard and pulls out the fig bars, sits down at the table and starts eating. When he laughs, his whole body laughs. And when he wraps his arms around my neck and says Oh mom, I love you soooo much it’s one of the best feelings in the world.
